Accommodations

Included with the registration fee are private accommodations at Thunderbird Lodge for 6 days and 6 nights.  Situated directly on the canyon rim, many of the rooms at Thunderbird Lodge have partial canyon views available, called canyon-side rooms. All the rooms have two queen beds. Guest room amenities include; full bath, in-room Keurig coffee maker, refrigerator, flat screen television with satellite TV, telephone, hair dryer and safe. Canyon-side rooms can be reserved on the registration page. Official conclusion of the workshop is Friday night (Friday night lodging is included). Check-out Saturday by 11:00am.

Meals

Each day breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be at the historic El Tovar Lodge and Bright Angel Lodge Restaurants.  Artists will order from the menu so they may have the meals they find appealing (some restrictions apply).  Food, tax and the gratuity are all included.  Just sit back and enjoy the food and the view.  All meals are  included with registration fee, 6 dinners (Sun-Fri), 5 breakfasts (Mon-Fri), 5 lunches (Mon-Fri).   Check out is on Saturday morning, no meals are provided for Saturday.   

Location

Your art retreat studio is located on the first floor of the Thunderbird Lodge on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.  Thunderbird Lodge is in a prominent location in the center of the historic district of Grand Canyon Village.  Nestled between the historic El Tovar Lodge and Bright Angel Lodge, restaurants, gifts shops, Kolb Studio, Vercamps Visitor Center and the Bright Angel Trail Head are all within walking distance. 

Studio

The studio, located within Thunderbird Lodge, looks out into the Grand Canyon.  Artists can walk out the studio door directly to the rim of the canyon.  The winter season provides some of the most magnificent colors within the canyon walls.  An inspirational location to nurture an artistic soul.

Materials

All basic materials are supplied. Artists will receive a supply list upon registration and are encouraged to bring their own personal oil paints, brushes, and any larger canvas they wish to work on.  Provided will be an easel for both indoor and outdoor use, basic color oil paints brush cleaner, and smaller size canvas.  However, due to the remote location, additional supplies will be brought in for any unexpected needs, such as, a variety of oil paints, extra brushes, cleaning cloths, and laptop with printer. Additional information and detailed list provided with information packet following booking.

Brief Workshop Agenda

Below is a quick outline of the workshop activities. This is a sample agenda only, changes are possible. A full curriculum will be provided and reviewed at workshop opening.  All instruction and optional sessions are included with the registration fee.  

Day 1-Sunday:
Artists arrive in the afternoon (3 pm). “Meet and Greet Reception” in the studio for all artists and their guests.  Introductions and overview of the Grand Canyon destination. Evening walk along the canyon rim photo opp. Settle into room, relax, explore the Grand Canyon Village and meet other guests. Evening meal at the Bright Angel Restaurant, located inside the Bright Angel Lodge. 
  
Day 2-Monday:  
-Breakfast, service begins as early as 6:00am
-8:30 am Group workshop, optional breakout sessions on multiple topics including sketching, composition, and perspective. 
-Lunch, at discretion of artists, service begins at 11:30am
-Afternoon: Open studio time, optional breakout sessions exploring color usage and various brush techniques. 
-Dinner, at discretion of artists, service ends at 10:00pm 

Day 3-Tuesday:  
-Breakfast, service begins as early as 6:00am
-8:30 am Group workshop, optional breakout sessions on multiple topics including composition, color and perspective. 
-Lunch, at discretion of artists, service begins at 11:30am
-Afternoon: Open studio time, optional breakout sessions including topics exploring shadow, shading, and light.  
-Dinner, at discretion of artists, service ends at 10:00pm 

Day 4-Wednesday:  
-Breakfast, service begins as early as 6:00am
-Optional Plein Aire painting opportunity at canyon rim location. 
-8:30 am Open studio time. 
-Lunch, at discretion of artists, service begins at 11:30am
-Afternoon: Open studio time, optional breakout sessions covering unique methods to approach abstract painting. 
-Dinner, at discretion of artists, service ends at 10:00pm  

Day 5-Thursday:  
-Breakfast, service begins as early as 6:00am
-8:30 am Group workshop, optional breakout sessions on multiple topics. 
-Lunch, at discretion of artists, service begins at 11:30am
-Afternoon: Continue individual projects, Individual tutoring.  
-Dinner, at discretion of artists, service ends at 10:00pm 

Day 6-Friday: 
-Breakfast, service begins as early as 6:00am
-8:30 am Group workshop, optional breakout sessions on multiple topics, Individual tutoring. 
-Lunch, at discretion of artists, service begins at 11:30am
-Afternoon: Open studio time, final questions and demonstrations.
-Dinner, at discretion of artists, service ends at 10:00pm 

Day 7-Saturday:
Check-out of lodge, farewell!

Retreat Policies

Travel Information

Transportation for the workshop is not included.  There is an airport in Flagstaff, AZ with limited service. Drive from Flagstaff, AZ to Grand Canyon Village is 1 hour and 15 minutes.  Phoenix, AZ has excellent air service and is a 3 hour and 15 minute drive to Grand Canyon Village.  Las Vegas, NV also has excellent air service and is a 4 hour and 15 minute drive to Grand Canyon Village.   Further, Flagstaff, AZ does have Amtrak service.

"Bring a friend for free" Policy

Artists may bring a friend for free.  Friends will share the same room as the artist.  Art instruction and meals are not included for friends; however, a meal plan is available for friends (details and pricing in booking). Friends are invited to attend the opening “Meet and Greet” on the opening day of the retreat.

Cancellation Policy

Deposit non-refundable.  Balance due by October 15, 2016 or spot may be filled by someone else.  Once balance is paid and a cancellation occurs prior to 45 days before the workshop, you will receive a credit of 50% of the total workshop cost towards a future workshop, upon availability.  However,  we will open up your spot and if someone books it, we will refund your payment less the non-refundable deposit to you after the completion of the workshop.  Cancellations closer than 45 days to the start of the workshop will receive a 35% credit towards a future workshop. We will seek to book the open spot, if booked, we will refund your payment less the non-refundable deposit to you after completion of the workshop. In the unlikely event the workshop itself must be cancelled, all money will be refunded. Sedona Joes Art Retreats is not responsible for any travel expenses incurred.

The Daily Agenda

A daily agenda has been created and will cover many concepts, techniques, and painting methods.  Artists are encouraged to participate in sessions that will assist their learning.  However, artist may opt out of any portion of the workshop they choose.  Their time can be utilized for ‘open studio’ time or to see and be inspired by the beautiful surroundings.
